At Home Learning: Homeschooling During A Pandemic

My favorite Homeschooling products for Pre-Schoolers and Kindergarteners

The other night I was cleaning up our homeschooling area which used to be our dinning room (it’s now home to all our homeschooling items and projects). I was thinking how I could help during these hard times by using what I know and love. As I was picking up and organizing alphabet letters and ABC popsicles, putting them back into their bins, I got the idea that I should share these items. My kids love them, I love them and they work for learning, playing and entertaining, so I figured other people might love them too!

I’ve always loved educational toys and often add an educational component to the parties I plan. I thought this could be a great way to help. Oddly, most of the items you see here I got last Christmas (I told you I loved educational toys)! So when the Coronavirus pandemic hit, I went around the house, gathered all the educational items that would work for homeschooling and created our home classroom — in the dining room.

After one week of homeschooling, I went to Amazon and added a few more items to our homeschooling collection. One of the silver linings of this whole thing is that I am seeing first-hand what my kids need to work on and I am being given the opportunity to teach them. That sentence just gave me chills because this stay-at-home-order is hard, not having as much choice anymore, and not knowing when this is going to end, but I do have a choice in my perspective to see the positive, the gift I’ve been given and refocusing my attention on what I can do.

It’s my hope that your kids get as much joy and fun with these homeschooling products as my boys have. It’s my hope that you find joy in these moments of teaching, uncovering your children’s strengths and weaknesses and seeing the opportunity to show them how to overcome challenges. And it’s my hope that during this time you’re able to make lasting memories with them. ❤

These Magnetic Foam Letters are great quality and cute! They come with two white boards, pen and eraser (not pictured). The storage box is perfect for helping little ones put the letters back in the right spot since each section in the box is labeled with the letter. Such a great homeschooling find! The ones above are currently sold out but these are very similar: Foam Magnetic Letters option 2 and a third option Foam Magnetic Letters option 3.

Alphabet Popsicles, double sided and clickable to match lower case and upper case letters. They key to this item is to buy two sets so you can lay out the whole alphabet like you see in the picture, otherwise you’ll only be able to layout half the alphabet since they are double sided.

Counting boards for hands to practice counting to 100! The Hands-On Number Grid on the left is by far one of the highest quality ones I found and 1 to 100 Placemat is perfect for placing mini items on to help count.

My son Aiden loves sharks so I got him mini colored sharks to place on the numbers on the placemat as he counts. This sparks his interest in counting and helps him keep his place, reminding him of the number he is on.

There are so many fun items here for hours of playing and learning! Grab these Shapes Bean Bags and play a toss-the-shape game while members of your family take turns tossing and finding the shapes around the house. Help teach your kiddos the foundations for math with this Fruit Super Sorting Pie Set which is great for counting collections!

These little Sand Timers are one of my favorites, mostly because my six-year-old Dylan loves them. They are especially helpful for his Zoom class meetings so he knows how much time he has for his meeting. Plus, they are so colorful and fun and that name “Happy Time” couldn’t be more fitting!

Alphabet making and tracing with pipe cleaners. Alphabet Cards come with Wikki sticks which are fun to use as well! Wikki sticks are wax sticks that you can shape into designs. I liked using the Pipe Cleaners better because they don’t leave a waxy residue like the Wikki sticks do on the cards. But I do like how they come with the Wikki sticks because you get two items in one!

You could even laminate the cards for longevity (once we can leave the house!), especially if you have younger kids and want them to last through the years. You’ll need kids scissors to cut some of the letters but for most you can wrap and twist them into the letter shape you want without using scissors, which is so fun!

Block Geo Board with rubber bands or “rapper bands” as my youngest, Aiden, calls them! This little board has so many benefits, from helping little ones to learn shapes, motor skills, concentration and creativity and for older kids to help learn fractions and mathematical concepts.

Pattern Blocks for making different pattern designs plus Pattern Block Activity Cards. They are sold separately and the cards really make the blocks way more fun and useful. Aiden, my 4-year-old, loves these!

Believe in yourself

Believe in yourself right now, that you are your kids best teacher, guiding them through this experience. This experience is not only hard on the parents but it’s tough on our kids, too. Their whole world has changed and change for kids is hard. As their parent you know how to help your child through this emotional time the best. When searching for those extra homeschooling items I came across these books, My Super Me: Finding the Courage for the Tough Stuff and The Magic of Me: My Magical Choices, both great for different reasons during this time.

My Super Me is great to teach kids about bravery and the strength they have within to do tough things, like what we are experiencing right now. It’s tough to not see their friends and to be thrown off their normal schedule.

My Magical Choices is great because it serves as a beautiful reminder and example of how our choices affect us and others, which is the very reason why we are all staying home right now during this pandemic. To help those that are more vulnerable to the virus and to help our health care system to not become overwhelmed. It’s a wonderful way to explain how we can feel empowered by making positive choices. I was impressed with both of these books and they’re now part of our book rotation for our nightly reading!

It’s my hope that these items make this whole homeschooling experience a little easier on you, granting you more peace of mind and pockets of time but above all I hope they give your kids some fun, engaged, independent playful learning time!
